OGDEN POINT IN VICTORIA, BC

For the past year, I have been working on creating a series of interpretive signs for the Ogden Point Cruise Ship Terminal in Victoria, BC targetted at the 400,000 plus cruise ships visitors which arrive annually and at the population of Greater Victoria and the visitors to the Ogden Point Breakwater.

The signage features twelve panels aimed at increasing awareness of the diverse underwater life along and surrounding the Ogden Point Breakwater and Vancouver Island.

There are four series of three panels. The first series of panels features images which flourish within the Ogden Point Breakwater, which includes the semi-protected sandy beds of eelgrass and the intertidal seaweed zone along the first third of the Breakwater, which combine to form a productive habitat sheltering the young larvae and juvenile forms of many coastal animals.

The second series focuses on some of the marine life surrounding Vancouver Island with details on their habits, Marine Ecosystems and Nearshore and Shallow Water Species, one of my favorite panels.

The third series features Lighthouses and Navigational Aids, the Marine Shoreline and the Climate and how it affects the Oceanographic Process.

The fourth series features Marine Protected Areas, Marine Parks and Terrestrial Parks on lower Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

The panels were commissioned by the Ogden Point Enhancement Society and funds were raised from many private businesses in Victoria and several Government agencies to whom I am grateful.

Of note, I would like to thank Scott Stevenson for his incredible photography throughout the panels, Brenda Laliberte for her work editing the panels, the Institute of Ocean Sciences and Dr. Peter Ross, the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve and Francine Burnette and Matthew Payne, Phillip Colla, Neil McDaniels, Rob Struthers, Kevin Oke, Jeff Lorton, Vera Hoffman, Archipelago Marine Research, Jody Watson, Vivian Skinner at the Victoria Coast Guard, Christina Craft and the sponsors, King Brothers, Western Stevedoring, CVS Cruise Victoria, The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Princess Cruise Lines, Point Hope Maritime, Ellice Recycle Ltd., Victoria Shipyards Co. Ltd., Seaspan International Ltd, South Coast Diving Ltd., Peninsula Waste Water Services Ltd.., Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, the Captial Region District, Helijet and many others whom I will be adding to this page over the coming weeks up to the installation of the panels.

These panels will be dedicated June 19, 2009. To see the entire series of panels, click here >
